My Review: The Frequency is one
of those books that lets you know on page one that if you continue; you are in
for a wild ride. And you go willingly, enjoying every moment. Bronx Rouselle is
a wounded man, an ex-hockey player, owner of a pawnshop. He doesn’t have
friends, doesn’t want them, would rather find release in a whorehouse than
commit to a relationship. When he’s offered Inuit artifacts and an intriguing
map in exchange for arranging a getaway for a pair of siblings, he grudgingly
accepts, not realizing he’s stepping off a cliff. Danger is on his doorstep,
ready to kick it down. The map leads him to Greenland in search of a mysterious
stone whale. What he finds will change his life forever.
St. Claire creates a believable,
sympathetic character in Bronx who is forced to tear down the walls he’s built
around himself, make himself vulnerable, and learn to trust. Will it be McGowan
the cop who plagued his as a hockey referee, S’High-Anne, a teacher turning
tricks to pay off her college loans, Dr. Gibbons, a Texas professor far from home,
or a battered one-eared wolf?
The action is fast-paced; the
dialogue spot-on. I really loved it when the story moved to Greenland. The
harsh landscape, the isolation, the beauty and raw power of nature was
wonderfully written. The mystery of the map was intriguing and original. (Don’t
want to give away any spoilers!) The resolution was satisfying! All in all a
great book. I think it would make a terrific movie.
I highly recommend this book to
lovers of action adventure with a cast of thoughtfully written flawed
characters.
