REVIEW

On the Bayou slaps you upside the face with the first page and lets you know you’re in for a wild ride. It’s a fast-paced crime thriller that drops you smack-dab in the middle of a Louisiana swamp.

When a beachside surveillance goes deadly wrong, Special Agent Jennifer Nash takes the fall and is put on leave. When offered a mission to take down a meth lab with a SWAT team in Louisiana, she begrudgingly takes it and soon finds herself in a bloody fight with a Mexican Cartel/Cajun Brotherhood outfit that wants them all dead. Jennifer suspects one of the SWAT team has set them up.

Bridges spends a good bit of time setting up the background of the baddest of the bad guys, a man raised by a hard father, who lives dangerously in and out of prison. He is a sadistic killer who takes no prisoners.

The story is told in first person present tense, which gives the story a video game-like immediacy. With a highly descriptive narrative, you’ll feel like you’re wading through murky water and swatting mosquitoes along with the crew. As the team are killed off in various horrible ways (is that banjo music I hear?) you despair that anyone will survive.

On the negative side, this book could have benefited from an editor to clean up the frequent grammar errors.

If you enjoy fast-paced action thrillers, this tale could be your 2026 Deliverance.

I give this book 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐stars
