Book of Shadows, Spell Book and Grimoire: A Witch's Journal of Magick

A Witch's Book of Spells

Spell book, grimoire, book of shadows, over the years the name for a witch's notebook has changed. In my witchy Midsummer novels, it is called a Leech book, taken from the 10th century Anglo Saxon Bald’s Leech Book, in which a monk recorded actual ancient spells and charms used by the cunning women, healers and housewives.

Grimoire comes to us from the ancient French word for grammar. It is a personal book for the recording of spells, rituals, incantations and more. Some ‘grimoires’ of questionable attribution include The Grand Grimoire and The Book of St. Cyprian.

Book of Shadows comes to us from Wiccan practice. The first Book of Shadows was created by Gerald Gardner, the father of Wicca. Initially, each coven had but one book, but now it is more typical for each witch to have their own copy.

I love the idea of creating a personal witch journal that includes not only your spells but your journey with magic. I found these amazing books on Amazon that are created for that very purpose. They are from a company called Leather Village. You can find them here: Leather Village Books
