REVIEW
Part memoir, part how-to manual,
part celebration of sport and finally part inspirational; this is how I would
describe DARE TO DREAM SCARY FAST, The Road to Kona. Wade Wilson was a
successful CPA, husband and father of three when he set a goal to participate
in a triathlon. For those of you who don’t know, this is a grueling three-part
race that includes swimming, biking and running. The race covers more than 100
miles and can take the better part of a day to run. The Ironman triathlon is
140 miles!
Wade shares that as a child he
had a competitive spirit but was never really encouraged by his parents to play
sports. In fact, he dropped out of baseball after only one year when there was
no one to drive him to practice, games or even to just sign him up for the
team. It wasn’t until later in life that he dedicated himself to sport.
It was interesting to follow his
journey from a beginner at running marathons to a full-blown elite athlete.
Wade shares many lessons learned along the way. I like that despite the hours
spent training, his family remained his priority, and I loved how they
supported him in his efforts, attending races and encouraging him along his
journey.
One of the big takeaways from
this memoir is the message that it’s never too late to take up a sport. Age may
limit what you can do but with practice, perseverance and commitment you can
accomplish your goals.
I would recommend this book to
readers who enjoy memoirs, sports, and inspirational stories.
