REVIEW
I’ll start by saying I’ve read
and enjoyed multiple books by the talented DiAnn Mills, although Christian fiction
is not my go-to genre. But there is something about her well-plotted stories
that really pulls me in and that is why I enjoy them.
In Canyon of Deceit we meet
Therese Palmer, a wilderness expert who, like all Mills’ heroines, is damaged
by life; in her case it was the death of her sister at a young age. But her
faith is strong. In fact, it is so integral to her life that she broke off a
budding relationship with the handsome Texas Ranger, Blane Gardner, because of
his lack of belief. When a colleague comes to her for help, his wife has been
brutally murdered and his daughter kidnaped, she turns to Blane to help her
rescue the child.
With his help, she tracks the
kidnapers to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in remote West Texas, a
mysterious and harsh landscape that has a spare beauty all its own. Things do
not go their way and suddenly the pair find themselves fighting for their
lives.
As with all Mills’ books, there
is a high level of violence in the story. The bad guys are pretty bad. But the
shifting plot keeps you guessing as to who they actually are and wondering if
they are they closer than you think?
The budding romance between
Therese and Blane is sweet and slow-moving but gives you enough to keep you
hopeful the pair will make a go of it. I really enjoyed the scenic descriptions
of the mountains and the dramatic scenes set in the national park. The mystery
kept me guessing, and I did not see the end coming.
All in all, another great story
by a gifted mystery writer.
Five stars all the way.
