Reviewer’s Note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Plot in Brief: Thomas Tallant, son a wealthy spice merchant, is asked to investigate the murders of two Jesuit Priests. Along the way his family come under attack and he and his friends work to solve both mysteries. At the same time, the Puritan Junto defies King Charles I, sending London into a state of chaos.

The Characters: Thomas Tallant returns in this very interesting historical novel. He is a hard-working son whose inquisitive mind is called upon to help solve a series of mysterious deaths. He is brave, loyal and intelligent. If I had to guess, I think his politics lean towards the Royalist end of the spectrum. His friend, Elizabeth Seymour is his frequent companion. Of the two she is the more interesting and I love her intellectual pursuits and to my mind, superior mind. I also love that she smokes a pipe. Ward does an excellent job of fleshing out his characters and making them believable.

The History: For me, the years leading up to the Interregnum are some of the most interesting in English history. The future of the monarchy rests in the hands of a vain man, sure of his place in the world and a phalanx of Puritan elite who have a differing opinion. I think the writer clearly knows his stuff and is able to make 17th century London come alive. I really enjoyed the historical aspect, especially the scenes of Parliament in action.

The Writing: The writing is good as is the editing. The pace is quick and as the story is not too long, it’s a pretty quick read. There is enough intrigue to keep the reader guessing and as in book one, the ending comes with a big twist.

Recommendations: I would happily recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction.
