Kingdom of Devils: A Review
I really enjoyed this book! More than just a thorough analysis into the lives of America's first known serial killers, it's the story of the struggles that our new country experienced in the years after the revolution. By comparison, winning the war might have been the simple part. The hard work comes when you have to forge an actual nation out of all the disparate parts, from urban cities to the setting of the book, the wild frontier where borders are ambiguous, land deeds unreliable, and a dog eat dog mentality.
I was really impressed by Grandjean's ability to ferret out documents on the Harpe brothers and their wives. Her analysis of their motives, the pressures that drove them to their criminal acts was well thought out and made perfect sense. Her ability to patch together their lives and deaths was really amazing. I highly recommend this book to lovers of American History.
