Crystals and Stones through the Ages
Stones and Crystals for health and protection
Crystals
are more than just pretty rocks. Through the ages they have been used in
religious symbolism, healing potions and remedies and as amulets for protection
and good fortune. The earliest writings about crystals come from Pliny the
Elder, a Roman man writing in the first century of the Common Era. In the 12th
century, St. Albert the Great, Albertus Magnus, was a German Dominican
friar, philosopher, theologian, and scientist who wrote and taught the use of
stones and crystals.
The
people of the Middle Ages fully embraced a world of demons, magic and mystery.
In order to combat the things that could not see or control, they turned to the
natural world around them, using stones, herbs, animals and the stars to impose
order in their lives.
In
the art of healing, stones were matched with physical ailments based on their
color and properties. Rubies and garnets, both red stones, were used to treat
diseases of the blood. Yellow stones like topaz treated disorders of the liver
and jaundice. Opals were believed to cure eye ailments.
Crystals
could also amplify the properties of herbs. Fennel was used to protect one’s
vision. If the fennel seeds were placed under a crystal, their potency would be
doubled.
From
the Book of Secrets: Take the stone which is called Corallus (Coral) and
some be red and some be white. And it hath been proved that it stemmeth anon
blood, putteth away the foolishness of him that beareth it, and giveth wisdom.
And this hath been proved of certain men in our time. And it is good against
tempests, and perils of floods.
Crystals
are used today for their energy healing and balancing properties. They are used
as aids in meditation and mindfulness practices. They can be worn as amulets or
placed around the home. Rose quartz is for love, compassion and emotional healing.
Black tourmaline protects against negative energy.
